Little Horn Continued
In Daniel we see the same prophecy of Daniel 2 and 7 repeated but with added detail. In this vision Daniel sees a ram “ … which became great and did according to his will.” (Daniel 8:1-4) Afterwards a “rough goat” moved swiftly to overtake the ram’s dominance and it became great.(Daniel 8:5-8) The goat had a notable horn which was broken and four horns came up in its place. After that, a notable horn came up and waxed great. (Daniel 8:9-12) These powers were to continue until the end of 2300 days. (Daniel 8:13,14)
In Daniel 8, the prophecy again is parallel to the previous ones. Babylon again is omitted because by this time Babylon is about to pass off the world stage. The ram represents Medo Persia (Daniel 8:15-20) and the rough goat represents Greecia under Alexander the great. (Daniel 8:21; 11:1,2) The four horns are Alexander’s four generals who divided the kingdom after his death. “In the partition of the empire which took place after the battle of Ipsus, Cassander obtained Greece and Macedonia; Ptolemy was confirmed in the possession of Egypt; Lysimachus had the greater part of Asia Minor, and Seleucus the whole country from the coast of Syria to the Euphrates." Anderson's manual of History, pages 55, 58.
The horn which waxed exceeding great is Rome in both the pagan and papal form. Rome succeeded Greecia. (Daniel 8:21; 11:1,2) Rome magnified itself against the prince of the host (Christ) and crucified him. (Daniel 8:11,25, Acts 3:15, Rev 19:16) Rome under the pagan and papal system destroyed the host. (Daniel 8:11,24; 25) Rome cast the truth to the ground, law and the gospel (Daniel 8:11;7:25)
Daniel 8:11-13 speaks of two desolating powers. the “daily” and the “transgression of desolation.” In later Studies we will examine both this and the 2300 days prophecy of Daniel 8:14.
In our next study we will look at the 2300 day prophecy.
